The Term “OMG” Is A LOT Older Than You Think…

Many of the older crowd blame today’s youth for screwing up the English language with “Text Speak”, however there’s one acronym which is possibly the most widely used, OMG… short for “Oh My God” that is actually almost 100 years old already…

We have a massive amount of acronyms that have become part of everyday speak these days, sometimes not only limited to the English language, but terms such as LOL (Laugh Out Loud) LMFAO (Laughing My F… Ass Off)  FTW (For The Win) and my personal favourite, WTF (What The F…) other wise known by its more formal description, Text Message Shorthand, have confused the hell out the older generation for some time now… but are the younger generation really all to blame for the confusion… well it seems not…

It appears that the term O.M.G. or OMG as most people type it, is in fact, almost 100 years old already… yes people were using the acronym OMG with the exact same meaning, short for Oh My God for decades before the world even knew what a text message or SMS was… decades before TV (television) was a spark of an idea.

The earliest instalment of the term OMG comes from a letter to Winston Churchill is 1917 from a dude called John Arbuthnot Fisher (yes that was really his second name… shame) The letters were published in 1919 as part of Fisher’s Memories.

Observe…

There it is right there… “I hear that a new order of Knighthood is on the tapis — O.M.G. (Oh! My God!) — Shower it on the Admiralty!!”

ja WTF 🙂

About Marky Warren

Your Blogger-In-Chief, Proud Springbok and Sharks Supporter.. If I could sum myself up in one quote, I believe Steve Jobs said it best... "Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes, the ones who see things differently, they're not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."
