IEC may postpone local government elections until 2017

The IEC (Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa) announced this week that by-elections in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the North West, Western Cape and Limpopo will be postponed.

Last year the Constitutional Court found that the IEC's voters roll did not show voters' addresses and they were ordered to fix the irregularities. This week's Electoral Court ruling may affect the 2016 local government elections which are meant to take place before August. Difficulty lies in obtaining addresses where citizens live in informal settlements. The IEC have not yet issued a statement regarding the postponement.
