Victor Matfield Gets To Meet Marky Mark

If you were down at The Slug in Wimbledon this afternoon you'd have got to shake hands with a legend of note... yes I know a lot of you are thinking of me right now 🙂 but no, I mean another legend, a Springbok Rugby legend at that, Victor Matfield.

Victor popped down to The Slug for a little meet and greet yesterday afternoon to sign a few copies of his book, Victor My Journey. I managed to scoop myself a copy and had Victor sign his paw print on the inside cover, note how he's incorporated a little no.5 in his autograph... cute 🙂

The book itself seems a decent read at 344 pages, so even the non reader shouldn't have any trouble getting through it. Obviously I haven't had the chance to read the entire book yet but if the back cover is anything to go by, it sounds like he covers some pretty hot topics which will no doubt provide some interesting reading. Take a look...

One World Cup, a series win over the British & Irish Lions, two Tri Nations titles, three Super Rugby trophies and three Currie Cups... These are one man’s remarkable achievements in a career that spanned 16 incredible years. His name is Victor Matfield, and he is an international and a South African sporting legend. You want to read his story... From growing up as a shy, sports-mad boy in Pietersburg to reaching the pinnacle of success in his rugby career, Victor learnt the hard way about dealing with the pleasures and pressures of life as a professional sportsman. In this much anticipated autobiography, he talks candidly about his relationships with his coaches, including Heyneke Meyer, Jake White and Peter de Villiers, the strong bonds he forged with his teammates at the Bulls and in the national squad, and his deep love and respect for the Springbok jersey. He covers the controversies that dogged South African rugby during his time, the rise of Bulls rugby and their lack of form in his last rugby season, the Boks' controversial quarter-final departure from the Rugby World Cup in 2011, his retirement from rugby, and much, much more. Victor: My Journey is undoubtedly the one book every rugby fan will want to read.

Juicy! 🙂

One topic that you know I'd be interested in due to a certain little petition that I may have started, is what Victor's feelings were towards my "good friend" Bryce Lawrence and "that" World Cup Quarter Final since Victor has been fairly quiet about the matter... I flipped through a few pages and found what I was looking for. Now I'm not going to let the cat out the bag, if you want to know I'd suggest you get yourself a copy, but what I did read was quite interesting to say the least hehe 🙂 I'm actually quite looking forward to having a good read of all of this

Unfortunately Vic had to run a bit early since he's captaining the Barbarians in the game against the Aussies this weekend at Twickers, and had to get to the dinner function, but he did want to get this pic with me before he left to prove that he did in fact meet me 🙂

No I was not standing in a ditch, he's really that effing tall! 🙂

A little birdie told me that we may get to see some more familiar faces at The Slug in the very near future, so keep your eyes on PharSide 🙂

Best of luck for this weekend and the future ahead Vic!

You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
